The Teluk Intan Hospital is built to serve the residents of Hilir Perak which covers an area of 667 square miles or 1727 sq km. Based on the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the population of this district is about 190, 868 people.

The hospital was built to replace the old hospital building in Jalan Bandar, Teluk Intan where it was built over 92 years ago to provide basic medical facilities. Because the location of the old hospital is often flooded and narrow areas for expansion activities and to meet the current needs by increasing the number of patients, it has been suggested that the hospital is built immediately. Teluk Intan Hospital is located at Jalan Changkat Jong - Ipoh. Approximately 4 km from Teluk Intan City.

Teluk Intan Hospital covers an area of 65 acres. Previously, the land was cultivated as a rubber estate. At the end of 1982, the hospital's construction project started "Turn-key". The Leighton of Australia Company has been successful in contracting with a value of RM94.3 million. The construction of the hospital was started on 3 January 1984 and was completed on 2 February 1987. Formally, the hospital was completed and handed over to the Ministry of Health Malaysia on 28 March 1987.

The total cost of the hospital is about RM110 million. The hospital also began to provide services (out-patient and in-patient) on 25 April 1987. Teluk Intan Hospital was officially opened by His Majesty the Sultan of Perak on 25 August 1987.

Teluk Intan Hospital serves the residents of Hilir Perak. The hospital's specialty services include the Lower Hilir District, Sabak Bernam, Batang Padang, South Manjung and Perak Tengah District.
